Mixed Doubles Nationals

This past week we were in Saskatoon for our first ever Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Championship. 

The new Olympic sport is something we’ve tried out individually with our own four teams over the last few months.  Our main focus continues to be our four person women’s team ahead of the 2017 Roar of the Rings but we’ve all enjoyed challenging ourselves and learning from other top men’s players as part of our first cracks at the Mixed Doubles formats.

The teams for Mixed Doubles are made up of just one male and one female player – in our case it was Lisa with John Epping, Joanne with Reid Carruthers, Emma with Ryan Fry and Rachel with Mark Nichols.  We teamed up with Slam, Brier and Olympic champions to take on a deep field filled with provincial, Brier, Scotties, World and Olympic champions at the Nutana Curling Club. 

 

The major difference between regular curling and mixed doubles curling is the positioning of two stones – one per team – that are set before the beginning of each end.  These “positioned” stones that are placed before the beginning of each end are also eligible to be counted in the scoring.
This year, the World Curling Federation approved a new option called the PowerPlay.  This option can be used by each team once in an 8 end game when they have the decision on the placement of the “positioned” stones – but never in an extra end.
