It’s a new year and a great start to the calendar year for us.
We started 2019 by capturing the Canadian Open n North Battleford, Saskatchewan. The victory was our 10th career Grand Slam of Curling title and our third consecutive Slam win of the season.
The Meridian Canadian Open was the fifth stop on the Grand Slam for the 2018-2019 curling season.
We managed to go undefeated through the triple-knockout qualification. We rolled off three wins in the playoffs at the Civic Centre in North Battleford en route to raising the trophy on Sunday evening.
The event started for us on Wednesday afternoon with a win over Team Walker. We moved into the A event semifinal where we defeated Team Robertson. In the A event qualifier we prevailed over Team Silvernagle thanks to a 8-3 win. In the playoffs we got past Team Scheidegger in the quarterfinals before downing Team Roth in the semifinal. In the final we faced a tough team from Switzerland in Team Tirinzoni. Facing a counter on the edge of the eight foot, we were able to out draw the Swiss team and win our second Canadian Open.
Sixteen of the top women’s teams from the around the world and 16 of the top men’s teams were in North Battleford competing at the Civic Centre.
The win keeps us on top of the standings for the season-long Pinty’s Cup. The next stop on the Grand Slam of Curling isn’t until April in Toronto. The Players’ Championship will see the Pinty’s Cup points doubled as teams chase the $75,000 grand prize.
AROUND OUR HOUSE
From North Battleford we head to the warmth of the Nevada desert. The 2019 Continental Cup of Curling runs January 17th through 20th in Las Vegas. We’ll join Teams Jones, Sinclair, Koe, Gushue and Shuster in representing North America. You can learn more about this event here.
Rachel spent time in Eganville, Ontario to help unveil the curling club’s new rocks. Our skip honoured her late grandfather with rocks dedicated to him. She also greeted locals and joined their Q&A session.
It was a much needed break over the holidays for us and a chance to spend time with family and friends. We celebrated Emma and Kensy’s wedding on New Years Eve. Rachel and her husband also made a special announcement over the holidays.
